Project: Hope center

Duration: 5 weeks

I was blessed to work for five weeks in the Hope Center, very near the old quarter, with the same group of kids throughout the entire time. Saying I grew to love them would be an understatement. In fact, everyone at the center was just the reason why this experience was perfect to me. Five weeks can be a frustrating amount of time to work with kids with disabilities; you might want to see improvement right away, which will most likely not be the case, and you could be gone before big changes occur. However it was the most rewarding, being able to notice little things that changed over time, and —through routine— making every kid a little more independent. It was fun finding endless ways out of the same objects to teach kids both English and Vietnamese (this specific task was very creativity-demanding!) The teachers were such an inspiring group to work with. Their energy was constant at all times and you could sense the genuine love and care they had for every children, it was easy to match from the very beginning; contagious even. Playing with these kids every day and finding out their specific interests and strengths made me grow attached to each of them in a way where I know I want to keep track of their progresses even after I’m gone.

It will be very emotional to me saying goodbye on that last class but I truly wish they continue to improve. Needless to say I learned from this experience a great deal about myself and what I wish to do later on in my future, and for that I thank the VPV staff, not only for placing me with these wonderful children but for their endless help and hospitality throughout the entire way. Every member of the staff I got to know was like a friend to me, and all of them show true concern and dedication to what they do. I am beyond thankful for this experience and all the amazing people I met at the VPV house with whom I hope to keep in touch. It is so great being a part of something where everyone shows great interest and devotion to helping as much as they can. Anyone even considering volunteering should do so, and come see Vietnam - it really felt like home!
